White Tiger

Our DT theme this week is “CATS” and I’ve chosen a big one!  Whilst searching the internet for pictures of white tigers for this week’s post, I found out a few interesting facts about them.  I was surprised to discover that they are not a subspecies of tiger but their coat colour is caused by a genetic mutation and they are not classed as an endangered species.  There are believed to be none left in the wild and, sadly, white tigers are bred in captivity purely for profit.  Due to the rarity of the gene, a lot of inbreeding takes place which causes the tigers to be born with a plethora of health problems.  Here’s my homage to the beautiful white tiger.

To begin, I used my MISTI to stamp the tiger from Fearless Tiger.  I like to use my MISTI as the stamp is large with lots of detail so I like to do a few repeat stampings to get a perfect result.  Once happy with the stamping using Versafine Clair Nocturne, I added clear embossing powder and heat set.

To create a camouflage surround, I used the Lava stencil and started with Mowed Lawn Distress Oxide.  Once, I’d done one layer, I rotated the stencil and added more ink.

I lightly filled the white gaps before switching to the darker Rustic Wilderness Distress Oxide, rotating the stencil once again.

Next, I added a little colour to the tiger using alcohol markers.  The stamp does the shading for you so it’s simply a case of adding a little colour.  I used some grey on the fur and blue on the eyes - all white tigers have blue eyes.

To create more texture to the surround, I mixed some green reinker with Distress Grit Paste and added it through the Leafy stencil.

Whilst the paste was still wet, I sprinkled some gold, copper and green embossing powder onto the paste and then heat-set.  This makes the paste bubble-up and add some lovely texture as well as some metallic highlights.

The sentiment (from Affirmations) was gold heat-embossed, backed with gold mirror card and attached to the panel with thin foam tape.  The tiger panel was mounted on gold mirror card and then onto a square white card blank.
